Summer Sunglasses: What you need to Know!
While most of us know that the suns UV rays can cause skin cancer most of us don’t realize that it also causes cataracts and macular degeneration. Sunglasses can protect the eyes 100% from UV rays and make vision more comfortable. I always recommend polarized sunglasses to my patients as they will protect you from UVA and UVB rays as well as reduce the amount of glare that is experienced.
The skin near and around the eyes is very delicate and more prone to damage and cancer. 5% to 10% of all skin cancer occurs around the eyes. Wearing sunglasses will greatly decrease your chances of having this form of skin cancer.
General Eye Comfort:
The sun’s brightness and glare can make vision uncomfortable. Glare can lead to squinting and watering of the eyes and possible headaches. Polarized lenses reduce the glare that is seen by the eye making them feel more comfortable and able to see more clearly.
Exposure to intense sunlight can hamper the eyes’ ability to adapt to low light levels such as those at nighttime or indoors. This hampered ability can make driving at night difficult.
Studies have shown that exposure to High-energy visible radiation (HEV) can lead AMD (age-related macular degeneration). Wearing sunglasses will protect your eyes from HEV.
