About General Optical
Our Company
General Optical Company was founded in the late 1930s on the outskirts of Kenmore Square in Boston. It was a full-service laboratory and dispensing company, employing 10 technicians in the surface room, 16 opticians, and 4 optometrists for fitting contact lenses.
Starting in the 1950s and continuing into the 1960s, the optical business as it was, changed dramatically, and totally transitioned into separate entities with the added competition of large chain stores. The challenge for many optical shops became simply surviving.
As General Optical Transitioned through the 1960s and 1970s, the strategy became centered on selling high quality European product coupled with superior personal service. As the chains stressed price by buying inexpensive poorly-made frames from Taiwan, Korea and other Far East sources, we continued to market the best products from France, Germany, Italy, and other European fashion houses.
We also stressed the latest technologies in lenses and lens treatments. Carl Zeiss Company of Germany and Essilor Varilux Lenses of France, super thin lenses, progressive lenses (line-less bifocals) All of these top quality, state-of-the-art lenses allowed General Optical to grow at double-digit rates, particularly after we re-located the business to Porter Square in North Cambridge in 1981.

We also specialize in custom e-clips sunglasses for all frames. With over 1000 frames in stock, our selection of contemporary plastic, titanium and stainless steel frames offers an unsurpassed selection to meet every need.
We carry classic designers like Gucci, Prada, BCBGMaxAzria, Calvin Klein, Mikli, Neostyle and Nine West as well as sunglasses from Maui Jim, Bolle, Ray Ban and Persol to name just a few.
We also carry the unique Titan Minimal Art collection from Silhouette, the ultimate in lightweight eyewear. Our staff specializes in helping you make the choice that's best for you. General Optical Co. is a total eye care store offering complete eye exams, contact lens fittings, laser vision co-management, and ocular disease management.
